White porcelain walnut . The Witch and the Fruits
The twilight had the dampness of winter days. The girl went down the bridge. She went straight to her house, took off her coat, and lit the lamp. The sun disappeared behind the hills, allowing night to fall early. At midnight, someone knocked on her door. The girl woke up restless.

With a lump in her throat, she opened the window and saw a ragged old woman who asked if she could come in and rest. Hesitantly, the girl nodded. Pulling out a wooden stool, she invited the old woman to sit. She brought her a slice of rye bread, some soup, and a handful of almonds. Pale, just skin and bones, perhaps death had passed through the old woman without her even noticing. She spoke slowly, plucking the words from an old vocabulary. Seated at the table, she felt the immensity of the girl's loneliness, so profound that she spent hours listening to herself.
“You who believe neither in spells nor in lost souls, nor even in the mischief of hell beasts, sit here near me,” the old woman said. From the mouth of a black cat resting at her feet, she took a freckled nut and placed it between her wrinkled hands. She cracked her fingers three times, and the nut split open. Unrecognizable beasts oozed, writhed, and leaped like frogs in the steaming cracks. The room filled with the pungent smell of rotten fruit.
